A galaxy at war

By nynja811

A war wages between the Galactic Republic and the Separatists! For thousands of years, the Republic stood for democracy and peace under the Galactic Senate with the watchful eye of its sworn protectors, the Jedi Knights. The Sith, sworn enemies of the Jedi, sought to destroy the Republic and its ideals under the guise of the Separatists.

“From the Core to the Outer Rim Territories, the flames of war spread throughout known space. It is a dark time for the Republic, as clone troopers engage endless waves of battle droids, and the fate of the galaxy rests on the outcome…”

I was worried that the rain would come pouring down all day today as I got ready to head to my local game stores (www.gvegames.com & www.jestersplayhouse.com) for the Star Wars Miniatures Galaxy at War release tournament. For those of you who don’t know, Star Wars Miniatures is a tabletop skirmish game, where (typically) 2 players battle it out against each other with a squad of characters from the Star Wars universe. I will explain the game in greater detail and depth in a later post.

As you may have already guessed, the recently released (10/20/09) Galaxy at War booster set focuses on characters from the Clone Wars era (between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith) and the Clone Wars CG television show on Cartoon Network. In a Star Wars Miniatures release tournaments, players purchase 2 booster packs ($30 total, yay no tax!) and either follow the rules for a sealed game or a draft game.

A sealed game is where players create a team out of the 2 booster packs they have purchased. In a draft game, all players open their first pack, take 1 character and pass the pack to the right or left. Each player continues to take 1 and pass it down until all have been taken. Each booster pack contains 1 Very Rare or Rare character, 2 Uncommon characters, & 4 Common characters for a total of 7 randomized characters.

There are 3 rounds total utilizing the swiss system tournament style (each player will be pitted against another player who has done as well or poorly as him or herself). After players have created their squads, they choose a map to play on the game begins! As I’ve stated, I’ll go more in depth on a typical Star Wars Miniatures round next time.

Here are some (poorly taken) pictures from both game stores. Dang, I wish I’d remember to bring my camera to such large events.
